UV-C lamp for laboratories: reduce moulds and bacteria in the air and on workbenches, without chemicals

A UV lamp for laboratories is a UV-C unit that emits germicidal radiation at around 265 nm to inactivate viruses, bacteria and moulds in the air and on workbenches, cabinets and equipment, without chemicals and without leaving residues. UV-Life supplies UV-C LED lamps to laboratories across India, with three models from US$119 to US$690 (excl. GST & customs duty) depending on the floor area of the room.

The science behind it

How does UV-C light disinfect a laboratory?

Ultraviolet C light is the germicidal band of the solar spectrum, the one that does not pass through the ozone layer. A UV-C LED lamp reproduces it in a controlled way inside your room.

1

It reaches the microorganism

UV-C radiation reaches viruses, bacteria, moulds and yeasts present in the room air and settled on workbenches, equipment and work surfaces.

2

It damages their DNA or RNA

At 265 nm, the germicidal peak, the energy damages the genetic material (DNA or RNA). The microorganism is inactivated and loses its ability to reproduce.

3

It lowers the environmental load

A lower load in the environment means fewer viable particles settling on open plates and a lower risk of cross-contamination between samples.

Dose is everything. Effectiveness depends on four variables: lamp power, exposure time, distance to the target and the geometry of what is being disinfected. That is why we don’t sell a standard unit: we define the dose for your room.

Where it is installed

Critical areas of a laboratory

Not every area needs the same unit or the same protocol. These are the ones our clients ask about most.

Isometric illustration of a laboratory with a germicidal UV-C lamp installed on the ceiling, a biological safety cabinet, workbenches, a microscope and an inoculation area

Inoculation room

The most sensitive point: open plates exposed to the room air during handling.

Workbenches

Work surfaces, sample holders and equipment touched dozens of times a day.

Biological safety cabinet

One of the most demanding areas: every opening exposes it to the microbial load of the room.

Media preparation

Autoclave and preparation area, where one contamination carries over into every following batch.

Incubation chambers

Warm, humid environments: ideal conditions for environmental moulds to grow.

Airlocks and anterooms

Staff movement is one of the main entry routes for microbial load.

The lamps

Three models, three power levels

We will recommend one of them based on the space, how it is used and your objective.

The UV-C LED advantage

UV-C LED lamp versus mercury germicidal tube

More powerful. Safer.

Mercury germicidal tube

  • Contains mercury: hazardous waste and risk of contaminating breakage
  • Scattered emission outside the germicidal peak
  • Risk of ozone generation
  • Fragile, with frequent replacements
  • Loses power progressively, in a way that is hard to detect

UV-Life UV-C LED lamp

  • 100% LED, mercury-free, with no hazardous waste to manage
  • Emits at the germicidal peak: 265 nm
  • Does not generate ozone
  • More than 10,000 hours of service life
  • Radiation can be directed at the area to be treated

Frequently asked questions

UV lamps in the laboratory

Which standards and guidelines apply to UV-C disinfection in a laboratory in India?

The UV-C device itself is not what gets audited; what is assessed is the laboratory’s quality and biosafety management system: ISO/IEC 17025 for technical competence and the WHO Laboratory Biosafety Manual (4th edition) for biological risk assessment and biosafety practices. Biological safety cabinets are covered by EN 12469, an international reference standard for these cabinets. For the equipment, IEC 62471 covers the photobiological safety of lamps and lamp systems, and the ICNIRP guidelines on exposure to ultraviolet radiation set the reference limits for staff exposure. UV-C is documented as a decontamination procedure for surfaces, biological safety cabinets and air, with its dose parameters and verification records.

How does a UV lamp for laboratories work?

A laboratory UV lamp emits UV-C radiation, the germicidal band of the spectrum. This radiation penetrates the cell wall of viruses, bacteria and moulds and damages their DNA or RNA, which prevents them from replicating. It does not act by chemical contact, but by exposure to light.

Which UV lamp does a microbiology laboratory need?

It depends on the floor area and on whether staff are present in the room. The UFO 200 provides lighting and disinfection for up to 16 m² with a presence sensor, suitable during working hours. The X36 covers 16 m² and the X50 up to 30 m²; both are higher-power, germicidal-only units for cycles with the room empty.

Can a UV lamp be used while staff are working in the laboratory?

Only with units that include a 5.8G presence sensor, such as the UFO 200, which cuts UV-C emission when it detects movement. The X36 and X50 lamps have no sensor and are programmed to run cycles with the laboratory unoccupied, for example at the end of the working day or between shifts.

Can a UV-C lamp replace the mercury germicidal tube in a cabinet?

A UV-C LED lamp performs the same germicidal function without mercury, which removes the risk of a contaminating breakage inside the laboratory and the handling of hazardous waste. It also emits at the 265 nm germicidal peak, does not generate ozone and lasts more than 10,000 hours.

How long does a UV-C lamp take to disinfect a laboratory?

The time depends on the dose, which results from four variables: lamp power, exposure time, distance to the surface and the geometry of the object. At short range the reduction happens in seconds; for a whole room, longer cycles are programmed. At UV-Life we define the dose for each laboratory.

Does UV light leave residues in the laboratory?

No. UV-C disinfection works by radiation, not chemical contact, so it leaves no residues, films or odours on workbenches, equipment or samples. UV-Life UV-C LED lamps are also mercury-free and do not generate ozone, so they introduce no contaminants into the room.

What maintenance does a laboratory UV-C LED lamp need?

Maintenance is limited to cleaning the emitting surface periodically, because dust reduces the effective irradiance, and replacing the unit at the end of its service life of more than 10,000 hours. Unlike a mercury tube, it does not need frequent replacements or hazardous waste handling.

Is UV-Life UV-C technology certified?

Yes. It has validations from MINSAL, ISP, SGS and Bureau Veritas, plus microbiological studies of its own and from clients that measure the reduction of coliforms, aerobic mesophilic counts, moulds and yeasts on surfaces, in air and in water. See the studies →

How much does a UV lamp for laboratories cost?

At UV-Life prices start at US$119 for the UFO 200, which provides lighting and disinfection for up to 16 m² with a presence sensor. The X36 germicidal lamp costs US$279 and the X50, which covers up to 30 m², US$690. Prices are in US dollars, excluding GST and import customs duty, which the customer pays at Indian customs when the equipment arrives.
